Back to: The Elev8 Culture Code
Pillar: Belief — The foundation of who we are
Purpose is the intention to achieve a long-term goal that is both personally meaningful and has a profound positive impact on the world.
In our culture code, purpose sits above the specific goals we set. Goals are the daily and yearly targets; purpose is the larger view of our life as a whole.
A goal might be to gain ten pounds of muscle this year through disciplined eating, training, and commitment.
Purpose asks the deeper questions: Why?
Why gain muscle? To become a better athlete.
Why become a better athlete? To excel in our sport.
Why excel? Because we are driven to live a life of excellence and make the greatest positive impact possible.
The first two questions are related to goals, the last one gets us to purpose.
Deep down, we feel it in our souls. We are built for more, connected to more, and capable of more. The true purpose behind most of our goals is to fulfill our potential. To become remarkable people who do remarkable things that lift others up, along with ourselves.
The most powerful purposes extend beyond ourselves. Launching an organization, researching a cure, mentoring young people through sports, or simply playing selflessly for your team. These are purpose-driven acts that enhance the lives of others.
Like happiness, purpose is not a destination but a journey and a daily practice. It answers the foundational questions: Why are we here? What is our meaning? How should we live?
When we focus only on ourselves, chasing fame, wealth, or personal wins, the answers feel shallow. Our lives are far bigger than that. We represent something greater: God, our families, our teams, our communities.
It is amazing how much it improves our own mental health, personal attitude, and our feeling of being fulfilled when we engage in selfless purpose.
It's a wheel of sorts, that begins with acting outward to serve another, and ends with a wealth of satisfaction coming back to us. The turning of this wheel not only makes us feel more valuable, it truly creates tangible value in our lives.
It's no wonder why being useful to others makes us feel good, it's what we were created to do.
We are called to serve, to love boldly, to sacrifice with compassion, and to be a steady source of support and generosity for those around us.
This higher purpose builds unbreakable confidence. A tough day, a strikeout, or a defensive error cannot shake us, because our belief is rooted in something far larger than any single setback.
We are living for a purpose so much bigger than that.
Purpose is a process, so don't worry if it doesn't always feel clear or fully alive.
That's normal.
Take time to reflect on what brings you joy, what positively impacts others, and what makes you feel deeply fulfilled. Shape those insights into the guiding purpose of your life.
You are built for true greatness, it lives in every one of us. We reach it by staying hopeful, optimistic, and growth-oriented, and by dedicating each day to a selfless, powerful purpose.
Reflect
- How does purpose show up in your game right now?
- What is one thing you will do this week to live it?
